What is lost economic opportunity when it comes to determining alimony?

Lost economic opportunity is a mandatory factor to be considered when deciding the amount of alimony that should be awarded. This applies to situations where a spouse has foregone career opportunities during the marriage. If it can be shown that he or she has suffered financially as a result of career choices made by reason of the marriage alimony could be used to compensate the spouse for those choices.
